Cotonou or Benin Republic: what's the difference

Benin Republic is the country. Cotonou is its biggest city. People say "I'm going to Cotonou" and "I'm going to Benin" to mean the same trip, because almost every visitor lands, stays and spends most of their time in Cotonou.

It's a simple question, but the answers trip people up all the time, especially the difference between Benin Republic and Benin City. Here's everything, clearly.

Is Cotonou a country?

No. Cotonou is a city in Benin Republic, on the Atlantic coast, between the ocean and Lake Nokoué. It's the country's largest city and its economic heart.

Is Cotonou the capital of Benin?

Not officially. Porto-Novo is the official capital, about fifty minutes away. But Cotonou is the economic capital: the seat of government, the main airport, the port, most businesses and most hotels are here. For a visitor, Cotonou is where everything happens.

Is Cotonou in Nigeria?

No. Cotonou is in Benin Republic, Nigeria's neighbour to the west. The Seme border is close to Lagos, which is why the trip is so popular with Nigerians. You'll need your international passport to cross.

Benin Republic is not Benin City

This is the mix-up I see most, even in hotel searches.

When you search for hotels, flights or things to do, always type "Cotonou" or "Benin Republic". Otherwise you'll get results for Benin City.

A little history

Benin Republic was once the Kingdom of Dahomey, famous for its regiment of women warriors, the Amazons. The country became independent in 1960 and took the name Benin in 1975. You'll see that history everywhere: the giant Amazon statue on Cotonou's seafront, the royal palaces of Abomey and the museums of Ouidah.
