The best beaches in Cotonou, by someone who grew up there
Cotonou sits right on the Atlantic, so the beach is never far away. From lively city sands with music and grilled fish to calm lagoon escapes, here are my favourites, and how to enjoy them safely.
At a glance
| Beach | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fidjrossè | Lively, local, sunsets | Evenings, grilled fish |
| Obama Beach | Bars, music, weekends | Groups of friends |
| Bab's Dock | Calm lagoon, eco-resort | Relaxing, celebrations |
| Ouidah | Quiet and historic | Day trips |
| Grand-Popo | Peaceful and slow | Weekend escapes |
1. Fidjrossè Beach
Fidjrossè is Cotonou's main weekend beach, on the western side of the city. It's lined with beach huts, seaside hotels and open-air restaurants with thatched roofs. People come to walk, catch the sunset with a drink, and eat grilled fish late into the evening.
It's busiest at weekends and in the evenings, which is exactly when it's at its best.
2. Obama Beach
A livelier stretch near Fidjrossè, known for beach bars, music and a weekend crowd. Come with friends, order something cold and stay for the atmosphere.
3. Bab's Dock
Bab's Dock is a weekend eco-resort on the lagoon, reached by a boat ride through the mangroves. The water is calm, the pace is slow, and it feels a world away from the city. It's perfect for birthdays, proposals or a soft-life day out. Entry has been quoted at around 2,500 CFA, but check the latest price before you go.
4. Ouidah
About an hour from Cotonou, Ouidah's beaches are quiet and wide. Pair them with the town's history, including the Door of No Return, for a full and meaningful day trip.
5. Grand-Popo
Further along the coast towards Togo, Grand-Popo is peaceful, green and beautiful. It's best as an overnight escape rather than a quick visit.

Before you swim: read this
The Atlantic here has a strong bar and powerful currents. Swimming in the open sea isn't recommended outside areas supervised by beach establishments, and many locals don't swim in the ocean at all. Paddle, relax and enjoy the view, and save proper swimming for hotel pools or calm lagoon spots like Bab's Dock.
Insider tip: Go for sunset, not midday. The sun is fierce in the afternoon, and the beaches come alive in the evening.
What to bring
Sunscreen and a hat
Small CFA notes for drinks, food and parking
A light layer for the evening breeze
Something to keep your phone dry
