Passport, NIN or yellow card: what you actually need to enter Benin Republic
If you're Nigerian, the answer is simple: bring your international passport. You don't need a visa for a short visit, and since April 2026 Benin no longer checks yellow fever cards at its borders. That's really it.
I grew up in Cotonou, and this is the question I'm asked more than any other. The confusion comes from old rules, rumours and people who crossed one way once and now swear by it. So here's the full picture, in one place, for 2026.
The short checklist
| Document | Do you need it? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| International passport | Yes | Valid for at least six months, with blank pages |
| Visa | No, for Nigerians | Nigeria and Benin are both in ECOWAS |
| NIN slip or national ID | Not on its own | Not accepted as your only document |
| ECOWAS travel certificate | An alternative to a passport | Less common, and a passport is easier |
| Yellow fever card | Not checked since April 2026 | Still recommended for your health |
Do Nigerians need a visa for Benin Republic?
No. Nigeria and Benin are both members of ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, and ECOWAS citizens can visit each other's countries without a visa for short stays. At the border you'll get an exit stamp from Nigerian immigration and an entry stamp from Benin. Keep your passport safe, because you'll need that entry stamp when you leave.
If you're travelling with friends who hold a different passport, such as British, American or Canadian, they'll usually need a Benin e-visa. Many nationalities can apply online before travelling, and it's worth doing at least a week ahead.
Can I travel to Benin with my NIN or national ID card?
Not on its own. Immigration expects an international passport or an ECOWAS travel certificate. A NIN slip or national ID card alone is not enough to cross. You'll hear stories of people who got through with one. Don't plan a trip, a birthday or a booking around that, because if you're turned back, the whole trip is gone.
Before you travel, check your passport:
It's valid for at least six months from your travel date
It has at least two blank pages for stamps
It's in your hand or your bag, not packed away in the boot
Do I need a yellow fever card for Benin?
Not for entry. In April 2026, Benin's health ministry issued a circular ending yellow fever vaccination checks at airports, seaports and land borders, including crossings like Seme. The vaccine is still recommended for your own protection, and the government can bring checks back if there's a health emergency.
So: if you already have a yellow card, bring it along. If you don't, it won't stop you entering Benin today.
What happens at the Seme border
Nigerian exit: immigration checks your passport and stamps you out
The crossing: you walk or drive through to the Beninese side
Benin entry: immigration checks your passport and stamps you in
Customs: only a quick look for most travellers, longer if you're carrying a lot of goods
Keep all your documents together, stay calm and polite, and only pay official fees. If anyone asks you for money without a receipt, ask politely what it's for. Travelling with a bus company makes this smoother, because staff often guide passengers through each step.
Insider tip: Cross in the morning. The border is calmest early, the queues are shorter, and you'll reach Cotonou in time for lunch.
Arriving by air at Cotonou airport
Flying in, the same rules apply: passport for Nigerians, e-visa for most non-ECOWAS nationalities. Cotonou's airport is small and close to the city, so you'll be at your hotel quickly. Have your hotel address saved offline in case your data doesn't work straight away.
Before you go
Change a little money into CFA for your first day. Read the currency guide for where to do it safely
Save your accommodation address and phone number offline
Tell your bank you're travelling if you'll use your card
Bring your yellow card if you have one, just in case
