Amazon Statue Cotonou: History, Location and How to Visit

Standing 30 metres tall on the seafront, the Amazon statue is Cotonou's most photographed landmark. It honours the women warriors of the old Kingdom of Dahomey, and it's free to visit. If you only see one sight in Cotonou, make it this one.

The story behind the statue

The Amazons, known locally as the Agodjié, were an all-female army of the Kingdom of Dahomey, the kingdom that became modern Benin. They fought until the end of the 19th century and remain a deep source of national pride. The statue shows a young warrior holding a rifle and a sword, looking out over the city.

Where it is

The statue stands on the Esplanade des Amazones, between Boulevard de la Marina and the Atlantic Ocean, opposite Independence Square and the Presidential Palace. Ask any taxi or zémidjan for "l'Amazone". Everyone knows it.

How to get there

From anywhere in central Cotonou, a taxi or zémidjan is the easiest way. Agree the fare before you set off. If you're staying in Haie Vive or near Boulevard de la Marina, it's a short ride.

Best time to visit

Go at dusk. The heat eases, the light turns golden and the sea breeze picks up. It's the best time for photos and the nicest time to stroll the esplanade.

Insider tip: Stand back towards the boulevard for your photo. Up close, she's too tall to fit in the frame with the sea behind her.

What's nearby

  • Place des Martyrs: a historic square close to the esplanade

  • Bio Guerra Monument: honouring a northern resistance fighter who opposed colonial rule

  • The port graffiti wall: billed as Africa's longest graffiti wall, with murals by Beninese and international artists. Free to see on foot or by motorbike

  • Boulevard de la Marina: Cotonou's seafront road, lovely for a drive at sunset
