The Python Temple

The Python Temple, or Dangbé Temple, is a Vodun sanctuary in Ouidah dedicated to royal pythons. For the Xwéda people, the python is a symbol of protection, and the snakes here are treated as sacred.

Where it is

On Place Agoli in Ouidah, directly across from the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Plan for about an hour by road from Cotonou.

How to visit

Pay the entry fee at the gate and a guide will take you in. The pythons are calm, and if you are brave you can hold one around your shoulders for a photo.

Make a day of it

Pair it with the Route des Esclaves and the Door of No Return, then lunch by the beach.
